Accounting software is a critical investment for small business bookkeeping. To become successful at managing your finances, you need a bookkeeping system that fits the needs of your small business, fits the time constraints of your operation, and fits your budget. Most people don’t have a natural instinct for organization, especially when it comes to their finances. How do you keep the books for your small business?
I’ve encountered customers who continue to use the paper bookkeeping system we introduced many, many years ago. These folks still write on columnar pads to keep track of their expenses, check listings, deposit listings, receivable listings, profit & loss, bank reconciliation, etc. It has little match-up boxes that tell the user where to put the total on the next form to reconcile and so forth. It’s a bit like a paint-by-numbers set from the sixties. Very retro.
I know some folks who have invested in complicated accounting software, like QuickBooks, which usually has a large learning curve and can be frustrating to use if you are not computer savvy.
Some small business owners do their small business bookkeeping in the cloud. But I wonder: Is the cloud secure? Can you trust your records to be there when you need them? How do you know nobody is snooping around and looking at your numbers? What do you think?
Through trial and error, some people have come to the conclusion that you can do more with less, that small is beautiful. I can’t even count how many folks have written me to say how much they prefer to keep their bookkeeping records on our ready-to-use, pre-programmed Excel spreadsheets. My Big E-Z bookkeeping system is easy to use, with a practically-zero learning curve. You can see everything at a glance all on one page, and if there is an error made when entering your data, it is so easy to correct.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how you keep your books, you just need to keep them. It’s like brushing your teeth: the longer you put it off, the worst it gets.
So write me and let me know: What kind of a business do you own? Have you found a bookkeeping system you just love?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for writing. The Big E-Z System would work well for you. You can track your overhead expenses and up to 100 search assignments or independent contractors using the subcategory section. New this year you can track both the revenue and expenses as mini cost centers. I’ve put together a 3-minute Cost Center YouTube tutorial on our website (www.bigez.com) which might give you a better idea how our software works in this regard. Kindest regards, Michelle
